When Phoenix leaders cut tens of millions of dollars in city services next month, they will be cutting out the heart of many neighborhoods, residents say.
The reductions will shutter many of the institutions that give neighborhoods some small-town warmth, a sense of security and access to low-cost sports, cultural and entertainment programs.
To help close a $241 million general-fund shortfall, the Phoenix City Council is considering closing 15 recreation centers, five large community centers, five senior centers, six libraries and three sports complexes.
