Highly skilled, trained staff are paramount to a quality afterschool program. The Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence collaborates with many local, statewide and national organizations to promote and provide an array of professional development and training opportunities.

Communication and Effective Team-Building

Bill Michaelis and Ezra Holland (www.children-together.org) are coming October 1, 2010 to present a workshop on Communication and Effective Team Building.  The workshop will be targeted to preschool  and afterschool staff and will be held at the Cave Creek Unified School District.

Step Up High School Summit - California Afterschool Network 

 

California Afterschool Network's Step Up High School Summit will take place November 2-4, 2010 in San Diego, CA.  Program administrators, high school after school practitioners and high school principals are encouraged to attend. The Summit will focus on successful strategies for high school after school programs.  Last year's summit was attended by over 400 statewide and national high school after school practitioners and stakeholders. The California Afterschool Network has worked hard to keep registration costs as low as possible for participants. Register before August 15th to make sure your high school team is part of this exciting event.

The Arizona Commission on the Arts is Now Accepting Applications for the 2011-2012 Teaching Artist Roster!

The Arizona Commission on the Arts Teaching Artist Roster identifies and promotes high quality Arizona artists in all disciplines who maintain active careers as teaching and professional artists, and have particular expertise in collaborating with communities and schools to conduct learning experiences in, through and about the arts. 
 
The 2011-2012 Teaching Artist Roster application period is now open.

Understanding Youth Development: Keys To Successful Programming: 36 Hour Certificate Of Completion Course
Understanding Youth Development: Keys For Successful Programming offers youth development professionals a unique opportunity to participate in a 9-month Learning Community. Participants meet for 4 hours once a month for nine months. This ongoing Learning Community provides participants with the opportunity to learn new concepts arising out of the most current research and information on youth development and allows them to adapt these concepts for use in their own programs to promote the positive development of all young people who participate in their programs.

Innovating Worthy Projects Foundation will provide grants of $5,000+ to organizations dedicated to developing innovative programs, disseminating ideas or providing direct care or services for children with special needs, acute illnesses, or chronic disabilities.

2010 Healthy Sprouts Awards

Deadline: October 1, 2010

The National Gardening Association and Subaru will provide 30 grants to schools and community organizations to plan and plant a garden in 2011 with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18.  Grants will include $500 gift certificates to the Gardening with Kids catalog, among other items.

CVS Caremark Community Grants Program

Deadline: October 31, 2010

Nonprofits working to provide health and rehabilitation services, greater inclusion in school activities, and access to physical movement for children under age 21 with disabilities are eligible for grants of up to $5,000.

Bank of the West Introduces Online Charitable Grants System

Deadline: December 31, 2010

San Francisco-based Bank of the West's new online Commitment to Community Charitable Investments Program provides grants to local nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving quality of life, particularly for low- and moderate-income individuals and communities. Grants are made in the categories of Community and Economic Development, Education and Job Training, Health and Human Care, and Civic and Cultural.

After School Advantage Program

Deadline: Ongoing

The GTECH Corporation is awarding afterschool computer labs to inner-city youth, ages 5-15, located in certain states, including Arizona.  They will award 100 Computer Labs at $15,000 each to programs serving minority and at-risk children and youth.

Captain Planet Grants
Deadline: Ongoing

The Captain Planet Foundation makes available grants, ranging from $250 to $2,500, for projects that engage children and youth in the environment with hands-on activities. 

Eligible programs will promote the understanding of environmental issues; focus on hands-on involvement; involve children ages 6 to 18; promote interaction and cooperation within the group; help children and youth develop planning and problem-solving skills; and include adult supervision. If awarded a grant, a commitment to follow-up communication with the Captain Planet Foundation also is required.

Grants for Gardens

Annie's Homegrown offers a limited number of grants for up to $250 to fund community gardens, school gardens, and other educational programs that connect children directly to gardening.  These funds can be used to buy gardening tools, seeds or other needed supplies.

Arizona Tax Credits Mean Funding for Afterschool

Did you know that Arizona taxpayers can receive credits of up to $200 per person or $400 per household for donations made to extra-curricular or character education programs out-of-school time?
